I have 256mb of memory. For the most efficient upgrade, should I add anothe 256mb or can I add 512mb?
I have a Dell Dimension 4400 that came with 256mb. I don't want to fool the the original setup, as I am not that PC savy.
I seem to remember that adding memory should be done in 128, 256, 512, etc.

the max you can have is 1GB of memory. now the 4400 only has 2 memory banks, so if you have 256mb you probably have 2 modules of 128mb each. so if you want to put the maximum memory in your PC get two 512mb modules to total 1GB of RAM.
you are correct that you can add 2 modules of 256 to equal 512mb, but withe modules costing about $33 for 512mb modules, your best buy would be the 512mb chips.
